Shadow Play
In October we got to watch an artist from the UK build a bamboo structure up by our school zone. Attached to the sculpture are large canvases for projecting films onto it, labeling it a theater. We have loved performing in this space and one day we discovered the afternoon sun perfectly lights this fabric panel up for shadow play. This has lead to discussions about the sun's movement in the sky because of the different ways the Eastern and Western sun light it up. Shadow performances helped remind us how we communicate with our bodies and can express in many ways.
Story Telling
Young children experiment with their power in the world in so many ways, and their words can be a great source of influence. When we see children pushing the boundary of truth at school, to get what they want or to be silly and funny, we use the language of story telling. Using this language consistently there have been lots of moments where we turn someone telling a story to deceive into an opportunity to tell story and perform. This has enriched the narratives of the dramatic play that's filling our days, allowing the children safe space to explore their edges of emotion and conflict.
Animal Care
Before approaching any of the animals' at the farm we work on our self regulation skills, taking deep breaths and acknowledging how important it is for the animals to feel safe in their home. It is easy to relate the animals' body language to how the children sometimes non verbally communicate with each other, pausing when an animal is running away and talking about how we might feel when running away from someone. We always want all of our friends at school to feel safe and comfortable. This month we welcomed the pigs back to the farm and have been so grateful to everyone bringing compost at drop off! It has been an amazing opportunity to talk about food waste, the regenerative practices the animals help us with, and caring for the Earth!
